Internet Ad Industry Begs for Regulation

The internet advertising industry is worried that the government might decide it’s time to clamp down their surreptitious tracking of web users. So last week, it released a 41-page report trumpeting its seven “self-regulatory principles.”  It should have saved the paper and just hung a sign around its neck saying “Regulate me.” Lots of companies want to follow you online for so-called behavioral advertising. Your browser gets stuffed full of cookies from websites and so-called third-party ad networks that serve ads on sites around the net and keep track of which of those sites you visit. You get secret cookies in Flash, too, if you don’t know or forget to turn them off. The idea behind all the data collection is that those networks will be able to create a profile of you in order to charge advertisers more for the privilege of targeting ads to certain niches. And hopefully you only see ads that relate to you.
