LifeLock, Inc. has agreed to pay $11 million to the Federal Trade Commission and $1 million to a group of 35 state attorneys general to settle charges that the company used false claims to promote its identity theft protection services, which it widely advertised by displaying the CEO’s Social Security number on the side of a truck. In one of the largest FTC-state coordinated settlements on record, LifeLock and its principals will be barred from making deceptive claims and required to take more stringent measures to safeguard the personal information they collect from customers. Netflix has canceled its $1 million contest aimed at finding a better recommendation engine in the wake of a privacy lawsuit settlement. The company informed its users today via the company blog, noting that it had "reached an understanding" with the Federal Trade Commission, leading it to ditch the Netflix Prize contest. More... |

Classmates.com Settles One Privacy Lawsuit—And Gets Hit With A Second |

The lawyers at United Online-owned Classmates.com are busy; the social networking site is paying up to $9.5 million, along with $1.3 million in legal fees, to settle a class action lawsuit charging that it violated members’ privacy rights. TechFlash—which first reported the settlement—says the site sent free subscribers promotional e-mails which (wrongly) implied that former classmates were trying to contact them in an attempt to get them to upgrade to paid subscriptions. Separately, Classmates.com is also being sued for making some user profile information public earlier this year. Members had the option to opt out—but plaintiffs in the case say the move is “confusing to consumers and is deceptive,” according to Wired. More... |
